An Olds invention where rather than having perfectly round slide tubes the tubes have grooves carved in them to provide more effective lubrication and allow for faster slide movement.

This instrument plays very well. The slide moves well, but I would give it an 8 out of It has some tiny imperfections, and some missing plating, which is visible in the pictures. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are several tiny dings throughout the instrument, a small amount of rippling near the throat of the bell, and there is also shallow roughness on the parts of the horn which might make direct contact with the player.

There is also a small amount of wear on the stockings. All this is visible in the pictures, and It is constructed of a combination of solid silver and rose brass. Giving this horn its characteristic bright, full sound and quick response that make it one of the finest jazz horns available to this day. The tuning slide on this instrument moves easily as well. This trombone comes with an Olds 3 mouthpiece.

And a worn Olds case. This is a Super Olds trombone. Worst denting in the bell section is 3" back from the rim where the slide bounced repeatedly from not being secured in the case. There are scattered small dents down the bell, and the tuning slide has some moderate denting- the tuning slide needs to be freed up.

The bottom foot of the front brace was resoldered cleanly. The handslide has quite a hitch in it and will need professional truing. The end bow might be partly to blame- it's had some crappy dent work and soldering and has two small patches. One of the inner slide tubes they're fluted as you'll see in a photo, was heated in one area and shows coloration from the heat; there are also a couple of pings. However, the boots are The slide lock doesn't hold- it seems that the"pin" is worn just enough on its end that it allows the slide to slip past; also, notice the 4 slots in that area last photos show this they appear even and possibly original to the horn, though I don't know that with any certainty.

Plays Great. This is a mids Olds Super trombone. It has been extensively modified. Modifications include: Hand-hammered finish.

Olds offered this finish on its Military models. This horn had serious cosmetic issues. And I decided to take a radical approach to the refinish.

The hammering was done on a set of bell mandrels, so the original contours were preserved. Wider Yamaha slide crook. The original crooks on these were very narrow. Causing problems for some players. The Yamaha crook is. New Slide Inners. The original duohexagonal inner slide tubes were replaced with round tubes.

The stockings are in good shape and there is slight chrome loss in a few places along the length of the top tube which doesn't affect the slide's action.

There are slight catches along the way. But nothing serious. There's slight waviness in the outer tubes, and a few places where dents have been removed. The slide handles have some pitting.

The receiver and locknut have been replaced with parts from an Olds Ambassador. Expanded leadpipe. The original Olds Super leadpipe was expanded on the receiver end to accommodate a modern small-shank mouthpiece. I've used New York Bach'pieces as well as Schilke ones and all work well. The tuning slide holds position well and slides smoothly. It's a good player. The case is an Olds case which is not original to the horn. It has cosmetic damage to it. Serial Number is and was made in February of http:www. This instrument was clearly cared for with TLC as there is only one tiny pencil lead tip sized ding in the upper portion of the tuning slide. Other than that there are zero dents or dings. Which is remarkable for an older horn. The hand slide is dent free. The inner slide shows a little wear on the right stocking but The Mouthpiece Olds 3 is like new and the case with the sliding peg latches is also in excellent condition!

Two toned. The bell and large sections of the trombone are brass and the slide, tuning slide and braces are nickel silver. At some point all of the lacquer was removed, as many players prefer the tone without lacquer.

It could easily be re-lacquered as well. When I received the trombone. They do excellent work and you would never know that there was a problem with the slide lock. Robb Stewart has further educated me on the status of production during the war: There were few musical instruments made during the war at Olds except for the surprising military order for Olds saxophones.

We do know that serial Super trombone was made in May , from the original warranty card, possibly made with on-hand parts that were manufactured prior to the war. The plant's manufacturing capacity was otherwise devoted to wartime non-musical materials.

This means that approximately horns were made before the war, and postwar production began in the 14xxx to range. The first serial number from the Robb Stewart article appears in January with , and then in August According to Robb, both of these post-WWII serial numbers were obtained from original bills of sale so the horns may have been manufactured earlier than the stated dates.

I have also received a report of ambassador 63,3xx being received new for Christmas in I have found another trumpet player who started on an Olds Ambassador cornet in no longer possesses the horn.

My current hunch is that Ambassadors were introduced mid-year in , perhaps as early as Below are my current guesses as to beginning-of-year serial numbers for the late 's. In arriving at these numbers I have attempted to reconcile the Robb Stewart data with the firsthand reports listed above.

I welcome any evidence that can help me improve on these guesses:. It appears that Olds moved from the Los Angeles factory to the Fullerton factory in the last half of I have also received a report of a warranty card ,7xx stating that the horn was manufactured in Fullerton. Based on this information, the best I can guess is that they began making horns in Fullerton in August However it could have been earlier, and the ,6xx could be a 'hybrid' horn, with a bell made at the Los Angeles plant, but valve section and final assembly done at the Fullerton plant.

Or, the two plants could have operated in parallel for a short time. At any rate, mid seems to be a reasonable date to use for the move. Robb Stewart reports that the mailing address was Los Angeles 'until ' so my guess is that there was a transition period in the last half of where both plants were functioning in some capacity.

Super Olds horns retained the 'Los Angeles' engraving much later in the serial number sequence than the other models did. I personally suspect that the production of Super Olds horns moved to Fullerton a long time before they actually changed the tone ring inscription, because I think I have seen 'Los Angeles' on the tone ring of some horns that were obviously made after the move.

At least by ,xxx the Super said 'Fullerton' in the tone ring. All rights reserved.
