Rib crack coughing

Well, between the muscle spasms and the hard coughing I dislocated a rib. It now pops in and out almost at will. Luckily, my cousin's godfather is a masseuse.

He gets the muscles to relax enough to slide that rib right into place when it gets too bad. Unfortunately, they live 2 hours away Samuel Taylor Moderator. That sounds very painful and I'd never recommend that experience either!

That is very luck that you have access to massage, it can be very helpful. I wonder if the 2 hour drive is worth the free treatment? It's good to hear from you, we hope to hear more soon! Sleeping is a new adventure in breathing and pain. When I read that you put pressure on the area before coughing made my day. I thought I was being weird doing that but it's the only thing that seems to help.

Arnold Admin. Sorry that you're dealing with muscle strain -- it really is no fun, and especially not with fibromyalgia. I'm glad pressure helps. It reminds me of how they often have people hold a pillow against their body while coughing, etc. So no, definitely not weird! Hope you recover soon. So now you have two affirmations that you're not weird. I am using Phillips one. We appreciate your providing your own tip as to how you use the nebulizer and conserve the medication while coughing too!

All rights reserved. Always consult your doctor about your medical conditions. When the cartilage that connects the ribs to other bones becomes inflamed through overuse or injury, it is called constochondritis.

Pain and tenderness in the area is common but upon coughing the pain is much more extreme. The pain you will feel as a symptom of this condition is typically located on the left side of your breast bone. It can be a dull and constant pain, but upon deep breathing, coughing or sneezing can cause pain in several ribs at once. Injuring your ribs can happen very easily.

You can break or bruise the rib bone, you can also strain, stretch or tear the muscles and tendons that surround the ribs too. Sometimes, overuse of the muscle can also cause harm to the bone - and that is just double trouble.

One of the classic signs of a rib injury is that you feel like you can only breathe in small gasps. As part of your recovery you have to make yourself take deep breaths. This is the only way to prevent lung and chest infections from developing as you need to clear the mucus from your chest.

Another thing to expect is some swelling, bruising and overall tenderness in the area. Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and other degenerative joint diseases can all lead to rib pain, especially when coughing. The cartilage that joins the ribs to other bones is also a large part of the flexibility and movement of the rib area. When this becomes inflamed, or begins to degenerate, the pain is often intense.

There can also be points at which the rib area feels stiff and it can make coughing painful. Another common cause is pleurisy. This is caused by an inflammation of the pleura a membrane that covers the lungs and has two layers and there may also be a buildup of fluid between the membranes. It is experienced by sharp pain when breathing, usually on one side, and severe pain when coughing, moving, bending or sneezing. The pain very often radiates up into the shoulder as well. In one study, about 4 percent of adults with whooping cough fractured a rib from severe coughing, according to the CDC.

The Massachusetts woman had received the whooping cough vaccine, known as Tdap which stands for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis , eight years earlier, the report said. Because the effectiveness of the vaccine fades with time, a "booster" shot is recommended every 10 years, according to the CDC. The woman was treated with an antibiotic, and she needed surgery to repair her fractured rib, according to the report.

She has since made a full recovery, the report said. Both can happen from over coughing and if you've had a serious chest infection like you say then its likely. I would go to the doctors if I were you as it could be a complication as a result of the chest infection.

There are a number of serious chest infections that can arrise from what seems like your average chesty cough! Guest over a year ago I'm opposite from the first response received. It IS possible to crack a rib from severe coughing Lucky me, I cracked a rib If you lie down on your back and suck in your stomach, if you can feel a bump, or protruding sick where the pain is, there's probably a crack.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot that can be done with a cracked rib, other than wait it out. Still, if the pain stays severe and is keeping you from your daily life, check with your doctor.

Good luck!! I wasnt aware i was possible to crack a rib from coughing!! That sounds horrendously painful!!! Ive had some nasty coughs before and the pain of that alone is practicaly unbearable, I cant imagine having that, combined with cracked bones!! I would still go get checked out at the docs, but like ADRAKE says you cant do anything about cracked and broken ribs, but you may get prescirbed some mighty strong painkillers!!!

Guest over a year ago I had exactly the same symptoms as JoannaB I've had a pain for about a week on my lower ribcage on the right- and it was really sore when I coughed but this morning I turned to the side while sitting down and coughed and it felt like something popped! I could barely move and everything went blurry and hot and I thought I was going to pass out. It's still very sore but mentally it helps to know it's not a cracked rib and it's also nice to see that my lungs are looking good even though I have a phlegmy cough.

Go see a doctor and get your mind put at ease! It might be a cracked rib! If its muscle related then you can still take muscle relaxants and put a hot water bottle on it to help the pain.
