View solution in original post. Why is the Inspiron not included in the list of Windows 7 compatible systems? Do you think it will it work with the 64 bit Win7 OS? I don't know. It could be because there is not a 7 version of the audio driver and you have to use the Vista audio driver. Thanks Jim - my Win 7 bit install is now working perfectly with the Vista drivers installed. For 2 of the drivers touchpad and the quickset I even used drivers from the Inspiron list as suggested by one of the forum members in another post, and the system is working just fine - for now at least!

I got it fixed, I ended up using a sigmatel driver that happened to work with Vista, it took a couple tries but it all worked out.

With the generic driver that automatically installed, Windows 7 thinks that no speakers are plugged in, so no sound output. Headphones work fine though. Running the driver installer in compatibility mode didn't make it install.

My laptop previously has Windows 7 Vista bit home premium. My laptop is bit capable and after going through the upgrade advisor, I installed Windows 7 bit. I can hear sounds when I use an earphone plugged into the line-in jack but not through the laptop-integrated speakers.
I have already searched for new drivers from the Dell website but I wasn't able to find any. As there are no Windows 7 bit drivers on the Dell website, your best hope is to install the Vista bit versions if they exist in compatibility mode, viz:. Right-click the file and select the Run As Administrator option to install it.
