Lactation educators are an integral part of the healthcare team working alongside doctors, midwives, and dieticians in many settings in our community including hospitals, WIC offices, home visiting agencies, and more. While lactation educators do not provide hands-on breastfeeding support without supervision, the scope of practice for a lactation educator does position the individual to provide prenatal breastfeeding education to groups and individuals, facilitate breastfeeding support groups, and to advocate for breastfeeding in the community and the public realm.

This non-credit lactation program is ideal for anyone working with childbearing women and their families, or those aspiring to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant IBCLC. Students receive accessible and inclusive health science and lactation education through research-based, ethically grounded teaching. Program graduates are armed with tools and techniques to support breastfeeding, while being adaptable to multiple health care roles including nurses, healthcare providers, clinic specialists, childcare providers, public health professionals, and policy makers.

This hour course is a bundle of three courses: Fundamentals of Lactation, Advanced Lactation, and Communication and Counseling for the Lactation Consultant. Self-study, self-paced. Students gain a fundamental understanding of the maternal and infant anatomy and physiology as it relates to breastfeeding. This course fulfills 45 hours of the 95 hours requirement of lactation-specific education eligibility criteria.

It is overseen by experienced lactation consultants and educators. Interns have up to 18 months to complete the internship.
