Some server applications such as database servers use this AWE memory for buffer space. But I haven't seen any non-server apps use that feature. When Windows NT was first developed the limit of 2GB per process was arbitrarily set for applications.
With the recent operating systems there are options for an application to use 3GB using the 3GB switch in boot. Intel and AMD processors have supported 64 bit operating systems for several years now. It is surprising that the move to 64 bit operating systems has taken so long.
That is probably going to change when Windws 7 arrives next year. Just switch to 64 bit XP or Vista. You'll have access to virtually unlimited RAM.
For the test I used the kernel file ntkrpamp. The fastest method to find the RAM patch location inside an unknown kernel executable is by setting a breakpoint at the function ExVerifySuite with the following WinDbg command: bp nt! For XP SP1 we patch the following offset in ntkrpamp. Top Mentioned Manufacturers. This looks pretty definitive. Fast forward button is installed on your credit card. By default, most motherboards use the physical address space just below 4GiB to map the virtual, but not in the OS sense addresses used by expansion cards and other peripherals.
Note that there is no solution for accessing all 4GiB of installed memory on standard motherboards that don't have said option. In the limited amount of hardware docs I've seen, PCI-E tends to eat way more memory than all the other buses combined; older boards let you get 3.
Limit on XP64 appears to be GB. Originally posted by DriverGuru: Um Originally posted by KDogg: Can we fast forward to our bit future please. A bit application cannot link against a bit library DLL and similarly a bit application cannot link against a bit library. This may lead to the need for library developers to provide both and bit binary versions of their libraries.
Windows XP x64 Edition includes both and bit versions of Internet Explorer , in order to allow for the possibility that some third-party browser plugins or ActiveX controls may not yet be available in bit versions.
Older bit drivers and services are not supported by bit Windows, but video and audio codecs such as XviD or OggDS, which are in fact bit DLLs, are supported as long as the media player that uses them is bit as well.
